The petrochemical, chemical and fertilizer industries sector in Egypt is considered one of the most important economic and industrial sectors that constitute a large part of industrial and export activity. This sector includes a variety of industries that are related to chemicals, including petrochemical production, chemical industries, and fertilizers.
Petrochemical sector
Total investments in the petrochemical sector amounted to USD 1.4 Bn, according to reports from the Ministry of Petroleum, and the production volume is 4.3 million tons annually of petrochemical products, including polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride(PVC), and 60% of the production is exported to global markets. The sector contributes an estimated 3% of the gross domestic product, and constitutes 12% of the industrial sector. The sector’s revenues amounted to USD 5.5 Bn dollars annually, with estimates that they will reach USD 8.5 Bn in the coming years.
Chemical industries sector
Investments in the chemical industries sector exceed USD 7 Bn, and the production volume is 9.4 million tons annually of products such as basic chemicals, specialty chemicals, and pesticides. About 30% of production is exported, and the sector’s revenues are estimated at USD 3.5 Bn annually. The sector's growth rate reached about 6%, with expectations that this trend will continue in the coming years.
Fertilizers sector
The fertilizer sector witnessed investments exceeding USD1.5 Bn during the last decade, and the production volume reached 19 million tons annually. The products vary to include different types of fertilizers, such as nitrogen fertilizers (such as urea and ammonia), phosphate fertilizers, and potash fertilizers. Nearly 50% of production is exported, and the sector’s revenues amounted to USD 2.4 Bn annually.
