MNT-Halan & GB Corp: A Broader Growth Story Ahead of the IPO
MNT-Halan’s potential IPO is becoming increasingly interesting, not only because of the scale of its existing lending business, but also because of the multiple growth drivers that could reshape the company’s growth story over the coming years.
1) CIB’s Investment: More Than Just an Institutional Vote of Confidence
CIB’s commitment to invest up to EGP 2 billion as a cornerstone investor in MNT-Halan’s proposed IPO, in my view, goes beyond a simple vote of confidence in the company.
The relationship between the two parties is not new. CIB has had a longstanding relationship with MNT-Halan, including financing and securitization activities. The equity investment therefore represents a potential shift from a financing relationship toward direct exposure to the company’s future value creation and growth.
More importantly, this move is consistent with CIB’s broader strategy of growth, revenue diversification, digital expansion, and greater reliance on digital banking solutions. This comes alongside the bank’s plans to establish Yom Digital Bank, following the Central Bank of Egypt’s preliminary approval, with targeted investment of $300 million.
From this perspective, CIB’s investment in MNT-Halan can be viewed as part of a broader strategy to capture growth opportunities in non-bank financial services and fintech, while diversifying the bank’s future revenue and earnings streams.
The potential strategic alignment between the two parties could also create new opportunities across financial services and digital solutions. MNT-Halan could benefit from CIB’s banking expertise, financial products and funding capabilities, while CIB could gain from MNT-Halan’s technology, customer base and digital distribution network.
2) Potential Expansion into Payments: A New Growth Driver
The story becomes even more interesting as Halan for Payments and Halan for Technology have applied to the Central Bank of Egypt for licenses to provide electronic payment services.
If the licenses are granted and the services are successfully launched, this could expand MNT-Halan’s business beyond lending and create additional revenue streams from payments and digital financial services.
This is where the company’s existing customer base becomes particularly valuable, as an individual customer could potentially evolve from a borrower into a multi-product customer.
As customers increasingly use a single platform for lending, payments and other financial services, customer engagement could deepen, cross-selling opportunities could increase, and the long-term economic value of each customer could rise.
In other words, the customer base could evolve from simply supporting the lending portfolio into a strategic asset capable of generating multiple revenue streams.
3) From a Lending Platform to an Integrated Digital Financial Ecosystem
This, in my view, is at the core of the MNT-Halan IPO story.
The opportunity is not simply about growing the loan book, but rather about the potential to build an integrated ecosystem combining:
Lending, payments, digital financial services and a broad customer base.
Such an ecosystem could enable greater revenue diversification and create additional opportunities to deepen customer relationships and monetize the existing customer base.
4) What Does This Mean for CIB?
From CIB’s perspective, investing in MNT-Halan may not simply be a financial investment aimed at generating a return on capital, but could also provide the bank with exposure to new growth segments and the structural transformation taking place across digital and non-bank financial services.
Accordingly, this investment could represent another step within CIB’s broader growth strategy, which includes:
Digital expansion, Yom Digital Bank, investments in high-growth financial businesses, and new opportunities across financial services and fintech.
This is consistent with the bank’s broader focus on growth and revenue diversification, while expanding its digital banking capabilities.
5) The Key Question Ahead of the IPO
In our view, valuing MNT-Halan ahead of the IPO should not rely solely on the size of its current loan book or current earnings.
The more important question is:
How large can MNT-Halan’s financial ecosystem become, and how much of that future growth is already reflected in the IPO valuation?
If the company succeeds in evolving from a lending platform into an integrated digital financial ecosystem, its growth story could become significantly larger than simply expanding its credit portfolio.
Against this backdrop, CIB’s investment, the potential expansion into payments, and the ability to generate greater value from its existing customer base make the IPO story worth watching, not only from the perspective of current performance, but also future growth and value creation.
